THE RULES:

1—All pokemon must be nicknamed.

2—I must attempt to catch the first pokemon I see in any route or area. I may catch no others in that area.

3—If a pokemon faints, it is considered “dead” and may no longer be used. I will release them from the next PC.

4—Legendaries cannot be caught or used.

5—The Pokewalker cannot be used.

6—If the first encounter is a duplicate of a pokemon I already have, I may ignore it and re-try for a new one. After three re-tries, however, I must catch the fourth one even if it is a dupe.

7—Gift pokemon, such as Bill’s Eevee or the Tyrogue from the Karate King, can be accepted and used and do not count under the “first encounter” rule. Forced encounters, such as Sudowoodo and the Red Gyarados, however, do count under the “first encounter” rule.

8—In-game trades are acceptable, but out-of-game trades, even to make pokemon such as Haunter or Graveler evolve, are not.

9—The Daycare Center cannot be used to breed, but it can be used to level up pokemon.

10—If all pokemon in my party faint, or if I am in a situation where I need to use a move like Cut or Surf to progress but have no pokemon that can use these moves and cannot obtain one without breaking the rules, I lose and my adventure ends.

Perfect! I’ve got myself all situated and comfortable, I’ve got my SoulSilver cartridge with the data cleared, and a can of Voltage next to me (If I was playing later at night, that would probably be some hard cider instead… hehehe)

All right… here we go! New Game!

“…huh? Did I oversleep?”  NO OAK IT’S ONLY 12:34 PM YOU’VE GOT PLENTY OF TIME

“Are you a boy or a girl?” Well in real life I’m male, but I usually play as girls in the pokemon games (especially X and Y, I love going to the boutiques and playing dress-up with Serena and I am a manly man with manly interests I swear) but the Johto remakes are the exception to that rule, because I can’t stand Lyra’s design… :I So yes, I am a boy.

Name? Dee, of course!

“Dee, your grand adventure awaits! Fun experiences, difficult experiences, there’s so much waiting for you!” Hopefully there’s more fun than difficult…

New Bark Town

Okay, now I’m in my room. Time to check my PC… oh? I have an email from Lyra! Let’s see…

“ADVENTURE! EXCITED! I love POKEMON!” …Lyra dear, you should probably use your inside voice. It’s impolite to shout.

“Hi, Dee! You’re finally awake!” I have been awake for hours, mother! I just elected not to come downstairs. Oh, apparently Lyra’s looking for me. I’ll have to work really hard to avoid her.

…dammit, that didn’t last long. Hello. Lyra. -_- Well, the options menu is now open, so let’s set text speed to “Fast” and get a swanky new menu frame… done!

I’m gonna explore around town and talk to everyone first, which I always do. Oh, here’s Lyra’s dad. Let’s see what he has to say:

“You didn’t bring your… pokemon? …oh, I should have known.” WE’VE LIVED IN THE SAME TOWN FOR LORD KNOWS HOW LONG YOU KNOW I DON’T HAVE POKEMON YOU INSENSITIVE JERK

Okay, time to go visit Professor Elm. I’ll pay no attention to the man behind the curtain that suspicious red-haired boy over there. Gah! The Professor’s music is so… peppy!

And of course, the first thing the Professor does is ask if I know about his research. Looking for an ego stroke there, Professor? Well, whatever. Time to choose my starter pokemon!

Johto is unique in that I love all the starter pokemon (usually there’s one I prefer over the others) but I think I’m going to go with Totodile. When I was a kid and had the original Silver version, Totodile was the pokemon I first beat the game with, so hopefully it’ll be a lucky charm and bring me victory!

As for Totodile’s name, I was just talking about how I wanted him to bring me luck, so I’m calling him Felix! Aw, look at him toddle after me. So cute! Let’s check out his personal details…

“Docile nature. Capable of taking hits.” Let’s hope so…

Time to pick up my pokegear from my mom. I just told you I know how to use a phone! You don’t need to tell me anyway! -_-

All right, time to head for Mr. Pokemon’s house. But first… I’m going to Lyra’s dad to rub my new pokemon in that smug jerk’s face! Hah! Take that!

Taking my first steps onto Route 29 and OH HELLO PROFESSOR. Well, looks like he really is insecure about his ego. How else would you explain him handing out his phone number to ten-year-olds?

Route 29

Naturally, I won’t be counting any of these encounters as firsts because I can’t catch pokemon yet. Onward to Cherrygrove!

Cherrygrove City

Well, made it to Cherrygrove without incident. Felix just mowed over those Pidgeys and Rattatas. There was one Sentret who put up a fight (“put up a fight” here meaning “went down to three Scratches instead of two.”) Felix made it to level 6! Hooray!

Now we meet the best old man in the pokemon franchise, no doubt. Look at him zipping around everywhere! Also, Running Shoes! I’ll tap the button once and never worry about them again. Why did later games remove this option? D:

I just talked to Felix and… “Felix is poking at your feet.” D’awwwwww, Felix! I hope nothing happens to you...

Also, buying some antidotes. Even though poison can’t kill in the field this generation, it never hurts to be safe!

Route 30

I healed up Felix. Now let’s go!

Felix pwns a Weedle and reaches level 7. Awesome. And another Weedle… and another. Is there anything other than damn Weedles in this place?

I get an apricorn box (I kinda wanted a berry for the upcoming fight…) and get a grn apricorn, because Nintendo can’t be bothered to spell things out correctly.

Holy cow, Felix is now level 8! Maybe I should slow down, or he’ll one-shot all the pokemon in the early routes and I won’t get to catch anything.

Youngster Joey blocks the path to Violet. What does he have to say? “This is a big battle. Leave me alone!” Yes, Joey, your level 4 rat versus a level 2 Pidgey. Truly a battle of Herculean proportions.

All right, enough dicking around. Mr. Pokemon’s house is right up there. He gives us the Togepi “Mystery” Egg and Oak is here as well! Don’t act like you don’t know me, Oak. We had a conversation—you overslept and couldn’t figure out my gender, remember? Now gimme that dex! Give it to me!

Ring, ring! Oh, Professor, it’s you. “It’s a disaster! What should I do? It’s just terrible. I—oh, no…” Rule 101 of professordom: be as vague as possible, especially when describing a crisis. All right, back to Cherrygrove.

Cherrygrove City

I don’t think I need to tell you who I run into, do I? Despite his awesome theme music, my level 8 Totodile utterly wrecks Chikorita, which goes down after inflicting a whopping 2 damage to me.

“Give it back! That’s my Trainer Card! Oh no! You saw my name…” (I prefer the originals, where he tells you his name is ???. How many of us thought his name actually was ???, we may never know…)

Nothing important to do in the route, so I’ll meet you back in New Bark Town.

New Bark Town

The Professor’s happy-go-lucky music doesn’t really mesh with a crime scene. “Rule number one! Whoever did will come back to the scene of the crime! Oh my… so you must be… the one who did it?” Sigh… no wonder all the evil teams find it so easy to operate. Pokemon world police are imbeciles!

The real culprit’s name? Silver, of course. “Thanks for helping! My next assignment is to search for this red-haired individual.” And then he leaves, never to make progress on the case for the rest of his life.

The Professor gets even more flustered when he finds out I’ve spoken with Oak. Yep, that’s right, Professor! He’s even more famous than you! Does it make you feel… inadequate? I know you probably want me to help you with more research, but I’m off to conquer the Gyms because the ever-so-awesome Oak would want me to! See ya! Also, maybe your pokemon wouldn’t have gotten stolen if there was more than two whole people watching the lab full of rare pokemon. Just sayin’!

Mom offers to save my money, which is code for buy things with my money without asking. What the hell, we’ll do it anyway.

And with that, the first leg of my journey comes to an end. Next time, I'll venture out into the wide world of Johto, and begin collecting some teammates. Stay tuned!

I needed this so badly. You made my day, Dee. :P
